Unit 1 Reflection

Going into this class I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew for sure that there would be a lot of writing (duh) but I wasn’t sure if it would be in the form of longer form research papers or shorter assignments due each class. The reality has been much less formal than my expectations. Obviously, we are still writing in an academic setting but since a blog is the primary product of our work, the actual tone and substance of our writing is much less formal and academic than what I have experienced in my other classes.              At first, the adjustment to this different style of writing was a bit of a shock for me and I even had a difficult time starting to write my first 2 source analyses because I was worried about fulfilling the requirements of the assignment and analytically discussing the sources. Once I got over this and allowed myself to simply begin writing I found the process much more enjoyable and the work I produced was actu...

Unit 1 Portfolio

Source 1: Pencils To Pixels [Book Chapter] lthough we accessed Baron's Pencils to Pixels through a University's  English department website, the text is in a rather familiar and traditional format; a book chapter. This in and of itself is interesting because it shows how traditional written formats have been adapted to meet the demand of the digital age. For the purposes of having a class read this chapter the digital format is much more convenient and eco-friendly, but does lack the hands on connection that reading on paper and being able to highlight and annotate in the margins provides. The formatting of the digital text also leaves something to be desired. Clearly a university English department isn’t going to have the beautiful interface of modern digital publications that arose during the internet age. However, text that stretches all the way across the screen with no margins and appears to have multiple fonts and sizes mixed in throughout the transcript is less t...

Unit 1 Free Writes

This was the very first free write of the semester and I chose it for this post partially because I like the content in it and partially because of how I felt about free writing for the first time in a while. I am like most people in the fact that I have never done a free write on my own. However, I have done a fair amount of free writing in previous classes at Syracuse as well as in high school. I have definitely come to appreciate the activity of free writing more as I've gotten older and the ability to freely express my self in school work has become less and less. Simply being able to pour random thoughts out onto a page and not being judged or graded for their quality or depth of insight is refreshing and the first free write of this class reminded me of the satisfaction I take in this activity.

Surveys/Polls/Quizzes

For this post, I chose to take a quiz that I've actually (somewhat embarrassingly) taken before.  The quiz was on  Which Character from The Office Are You  on Buzzfeed.  Obviously  this is not the most  in depth  quiz but I actually think that the answer that I got was generally similar to my personality and representative of me. I got Darryl Philbin as my result and although at  first  I was a little surprised, after reading the quick description as to the characteristics of a “Darryl” I actually thought it was a very accurate result. I am ambitous and hardworking but I definitely like to mess around, have fun and laugh as well. Clearly the description is very vaugue and could apply to a wide range of people but that is simply the nature of this type of quiz. While it is hard to directly compare the results of my friends on this quiz because there were at least 9 options for every questions...
