Unit 1 Reflection

Going into this class I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew for sure that there would be a lot of writing (duh) but I wasn’t sure if it would be in the form of longer form research papers or shorter assignments due each class. The reality has been much less formal than my expectations. Obviously, we are still writing in an academic setting but since a blog is the primary product of our work, the actual tone and substance of our writing is much less formal and academic than what I have experienced in my other classes.

At first, the adjustment to this different style of writing was a bit of a shock for me and I even had a difficult time starting to write my first 2 source analyses because I was worried about fulfilling the requirements of the assignment and analytically discussing the sources. Once I got over this and allowed myself to simply begin writing I found the process much more enjoyable and the work I produced was actually much better. When I went back after the fact and looked at the listed requirements for the source analysis assignments on the Unit 1 Assignment Sheet I found that what I had produced fulfilled a good majority of the suggested points of discussion. I naturally included many of the elements because I have been trained on how to summarize, analyze and express my thoughts on a source in a variety of other classes. It was as if I had the right instincts but my initial apprehension about the requirements held me back from following them. This helped me realize that writing in a blog format is much more about your natural writing instincts and less about picking apart each sentence. For the rest of the semester, I am going to work on letting go and allowing myself to write freely in the blog format because I think the product ends up being better more insightful as a result.

Comments

  1. I also felt that it was difficult at first beginning the assignment, since I am also an analytical person and always want to make sure I am fulfilling all requirements. I agree that once I was able to take the pressure off myself, I was able to write freely and express my thoughts more clearly. I like that you addressed this in your reflection, for I think many other students also felt the same way. - Krista Stephens

Unit 1 Portfolio

Source 1: Pencils To Pixels [Book Chapter] lthough we accessed Baron's Pencils to Pixels through a University's  English department website, the text is in a rather familiar and traditional format; a book chapter. This in and of itself is interesting because it shows how traditional written formats have been adapted to meet the demand of the digital age. For the purposes of having a class read this chapter the digital format is much more convenient and eco-friendly, but does lack the hands on connection that reading on paper and being able to highlight and annotate in the margins provides. The formatting of the digital text also leaves something to be desired. Clearly a university English department isn’t going to have the beautiful interface of modern digital publications that arose during the internet age. However, text that stretches all the way across the screen with no margins and appears to have multiple fonts and sizes mixed in throughout the transcript is less t...

Abstract/Pitch

I sent this abstract in the form of an email to several teachers and administrators at different schools in my hometown. I chose to send it to them because they are part of my target audience and I wanted to highlight the main points of my research and findings, while still giving my target audience a reason to read the full report.

Unit 2 Library

As a kid, I went to the local library pretty regularly and actually looked forward to my visits. There was a floor exclusively for kids and on top of shelves of kid’s books there was also a reading area with comfy chairs, toys and giant stuffed animals. My parents definitely contributed to the amount that I went to the library because it was probably a pretty easy way to keep me entertained while I did something that was good.             Once I was a bit older, I stopped going to the library for fun altogether and really only visited when I needed to for school. Since I went to a small Montessori school, we didn’t have a library on campus so any time we needed to check out a book or do research, our teachers would help us navigate the library catalogue and get the books or resources that we needed.             In high school, the library was the location of my mandatory te...
