Unit 2 Library

As a kid, I went to the local library pretty regularly and actually looked forward to my visits. There was a floor exclusively for kids and on top of shelves of kid’s books there was also a reading area with comfy chairs, toys and giant stuffed animals. My parents definitely contributed to the amount that I went to the library because it was probably a pretty easy way to keep me entertained while I did something that was good.
            Once I was a bit older, I stopped going to the library for fun altogether and really only visited when I needed to for school. Since I went to a small Montessori school, we didn’t have a library on campus so any time we needed to check out a book or do research, our teachers would help us navigate the library catalogue and get the books or resources that we needed.
            In high school, the library was the location of my mandatory team study halls (which mostly consisted of messing around and doing everything except school work) and the occasional group project meeting and I did have several major research projects that I utilized the library databases to complete. This was my first exposure to using the combination of in print and online resources from the library.
            Fast forward to being at Syracuse and I engage with the library pretty regularly, albeit only to get access to the online subject specific research guides for my classes. I very rarely go to the library to do work or check out books but it is still a vital part of how I get work done. The presence of online databases through the library has definitely made the research process easier and given me access to a wider range of resources than I would have been afforded if I was going to college before the internet. However, the availability of the resources through the library website exponentially decreases the necessity of me actually physically going into the library.



Patton's Drive, the book I checked out from the library. I chose the book because my grandfather served in Patton's 3rd army and I have always admired Patton as a leader and strategist. 

I brought the book with me on the road trip down to Liberty University in Virginia. I normally don't read on the bus but 9 hours is too much Netflix to watch in a day.

    I like this piece a lot because I can relate to it. I think we all stopped going to the library as we have gotten older . When I was young the library was a hangout spot and now I just go as needed .

    I like that you discussed your specific experiences with the library. I found it interesting that you often use the databases available to us, since I have not found much use for them yet. - Krista

Source 1: Pencils To Pixels [Book Chapter] lthough we accessed Baron's Pencils to Pixels through a University's  English department website, the text is in a rather familiar and traditional format; a book chapter. This in and of itself is interesting because it shows how traditional written formats have been adapted to meet the demand of the digital age. For the purposes of having a class read this chapter the digital format is much more convenient and eco-friendly, but does lack the hands on connection that reading on paper and being able to highlight and annotate in the margins provides. The formatting of the digital text also leaves something to be desired. Clearly a university English department isn’t going to have the beautiful interface of modern digital publications that arose during the internet age. Abstract/Pitch

I sent this abstract in the form of an email to several teachers and administrators at different schools in my hometown. I chose to send it to them because they are part of my target audience and I wanted to highlight the main points of my research and findings, while still giving my target audience a reason to read the full report.
