Graphic Novels

This graphic novel assignment has been one of my favorite of the semester so far. I had never read, looked at or even picked up a graphic novel before this assignment but I read the book that I picked out from the library cover to cover in one night.  I really enjoyed the added visual component to reading a book and I found that interpreting images was more satisfying than interpreting written words, since there is more room for ambiguity and imagination. This may sound a little counterintuitive, because reading a fictional story in a regular book is all about creating the environment described in the text, in your mind so you have a picture of the scene and characters. While this is the case, a regular book tells you exactly what to pay attention to. What aspects of physical looks are important, what the key moments in a battle scene are. The graphic novel on the other hand, sometimes uses almost exclusively images to introduce a character or describe a battle scene and it is up to the reader to dissect each picture/scene and interpret a meaning.

As far as technology for communication, the graphic novel seems best suited for fictional works, primarily because the association between comics and kids. The pictures just make it seem less serious. I actually think that a graphic novel could be a really great way to convey an argument, even and academic or professional on, but due to its perception it would be discounted before the content was even considered.

Unit 1 Portfolio

Source 1: Pencils To Pixels [Book Chapter] lthough we accessed Baron's Pencils to Pixels through a University's  English department website, the text is in a rather familiar and traditional format; a book chapter. This in and of itself is interesting because it shows how traditional written formats have been adapted to meet the demand of the digital age. For the purposes of having a class read this chapter the digital format is much more convenient and eco-friendly, but does lack the hands on connection that reading on paper and being able to highlight and annotate in the margins provides. The formatting of the digital text also leaves something to be desired. Clearly a university English department isn’t going to have the beautiful interface of modern digital publications that arose during the internet age. However, text that stretches all the way across the screen with no margins and appears to have multiple fonts and sizes mixed in throughout the transcript is less t...

Abstract/Pitch

I sent this abstract in the form of an email to several teachers and administrators at different schools in my hometown. I chose to send it to them because they are part of my target audience and I wanted to highlight the main points of my research and findings, while still giving my target audience a reason to read the full report.

Unit 2 Library

As a kid, I went to the local library pretty regularly and actually looked forward to my visits. There was a floor exclusively for kids and on top of shelves of kid’s books there was also a reading area with comfy chairs, toys and giant stuffed animals. My parents definitely contributed to the amount that I went to the library because it was probably a pretty easy way to keep me entertained while I did something that was good.             Once I was a bit older, I stopped going to the library for fun altogether and really only visited when I needed to for school. Since I went to a small Montessori school, we didn’t have a library on campus so any time we needed to check out a book or do research, our teachers would help us navigate the library catalogue and get the books or resources that we needed.             In high school, the library was the location of my mandatory te...
